Fritz-Alder Precast is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Officer who can take the lead in building and strengthening our safety culture. This is a hands-on role for someone confident in making decisions, improving systems, and ensuring our people go home safely every day.

You’ll be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive health and safety program that meets or exceeds regulatory requirements. You’ll work closely with Managers, Supervisors, and employees across all departments to promote safe work practices, reduce risk, and build accountability at every level.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing and implementing safety policies, procedures, and guidelines in line with provincial health and safety standards, working in partnership with our external safety consultant.
  • Ensuring the highest safety compliance standards and a healthy work setting for employees and visitors.
  • Monitoring and staying updated on safety regulations, codes, and standards/best practices applicable to the industry to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Supporting emergency preparedness and response efforts, including developing emergency preparedness plans and procedures.
  • Investigating incidents to determine root causes and implementing corrective measures to prevent a recurrence.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to promote safety initiatives and ensure the integration of safety practices into daily operations.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective communication channels with external organizations, such as government bodies and safety organizations.
  • Participate in Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits to identify potential safety issues and ensure compliance with established safety protocols.
  • Investigate and document incidents, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide regular, impactful safety training sessions to promote awareness.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation for safety inspections, incidents and training; take ownership of all internal safety documents and procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of safety strategies, plans and procedures, and adjust as needed.

Required skills and qualifications:

  • Accredited safety auditor credentials or other professional designation, e.g. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP),is preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in a safety-related role, preferably in an industrial manufacturing facility or governmental agency (Ministry of Labour).
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification (or ability to obtain within first 2 months of employment).
  • Experience and knowledgeable working under Ontario H&S Legislation, codes, practices, and standards.
  • Proven record of developing, implementing, and embedding a strong safety culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate safety expectations and issues, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in safety auditing, inspection and identifying hazards.
  • In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, standards and best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and mitigate potential risks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with employees at all levels.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to enforce safety procedures and protocols.
  • Knowledge of emergency response and crisis management.
  • Experience in managing safety in diverse work environments.

Location:

  • This position will initially be based in Chepstow, Ontario, with the opportunity to grow and take on broader responsibility for health and safety at construction sites throughout Ontario, which would require periodic travel.
